New child safety education project

New child safety education project launched - sponsored by Herts Crime Commissioner

Police and Crime Commissioner, David Lloyd, has welcomed the launch of a new education project that aims to make primary school children in Hertfordshire safer.

The Commissioner joined the team at 1decision Ltd on Wednesday (11th November) for a launch event of their new ‘Fire Service’ module, which was part-paid for with a grant from the Commissioner’s Community Fund (CCF).

Earlier this year the Stevenage-based company was awarded £21,185 from the CCF towards creating a dynamic and interactive education resource about fire safety and crime reduction for primary schools across the county.

The education materials, which are designed by 1decision, will help children understand the consequences of hoax calling and petty arson, and teaches them how to stay safe within their homes and the community. It also teaches children about unsafe activities like texting while driving, so that they can help encourage their parents and guardians not to do it. This material will be provided free to schools in Hertfordshire.

The event, at Stevenage Arts and Leisure Centre, was attended by Stevenage MP Stephen McPartland, deputy Stevenage Mayor John Lloyd, the NSPCC and Herts Fire & Rescue Service. The assembled dignitaries were given premiere screenings of the films created for the programme.

Hayley Sherwood said: “We wanted to work with the fire service to try and reduce incidents across Hertfordshire. The fire service were fantastic to work with, their clear passion for keeping people safe cannot be understated. This resource will save lives…”

Commissioner Lloyd said: “The CCF was set up to provide a springboard for innovative ideas that make a difference to people’s lives in the county, whether they are created by community groups or voluntary or business organisations. I was delighted to help get this project off the ground by awarding the grant which will hopefully help children across the county learn important lessons about staying safe.”

Mr McPartland said: “I have been involved with the 1decision concept since it first began and Hayley Sherwood is an inspirational leader. More importantly, she is a local mum who wants to help children understand the power of choice when encountering life’s challenges for the first time.”
